Genealogy Collection

The Garrett Memorial Public Library has several old newspapers on microfilm, dating as far back as 1869 - though not all are complete.

Printed census records, as well as microfilm census records, are also available. We also have some early plat maps and local yearbooks, dating back to 1909.

The records are available for searching on-site in our Geneology room, with staff available to provide some assistance to those doing research.

Also available to researchers is an index of over 20,000 surnames which have been gleaned from the following sources:

Newspaper obituaries

Scrapbooks

History books

Cemetery records

Newspaper accounts of weddings and anniversaries

Family histories

Church records

Many hours of labor have gone into the collecting and indexing of the records, and we are grateful for the work done by several dedicated volunteers: Helen Daniels, Phyllis Cosby, Jeanne Fowler, and Sandy Fincher.
